Refugee Rehabilitation Egypt

Egypt is home to a significant refugee population, with individuals fleeing conflict, persecution, and instability from countries like Syria, Sudan, South Sudan, Yemen, Eritrea, and Ethiopia. According to the UNHCR, Egypt hosts hundreds of thousands of refugees and asylum seekers, making it one of the key transit and destination countries in the region. These refugees face immense challenges, including legal barriers to employment, limited access to healthcare and education, and inadequate housing and social support systems.. Struggling to survive in an unfamiliar environment, they face exorbitant rent demands for housing, a lack of employment opportunities, and dire economic constraints that make medical treatment and essential services unattainable. These conditions have pushed already vulnerable individuals into a state of acute distress, exacerbating their suffering and undermining their dignity.

In response to this urgent humanitarian need, the Shirin Sajmila International Foundation has stepped in to provide critical basic services to these displaced populations. By addressing immediate necessities such as food, shelter, and medical aid, the foundation seeks to alleviate the overwhelming challenges faced by refugees. Through targeted programs and community-driven initiatives, we aim to restore a sense of stability and hope for those displaced, ensuring their resilience in the face of adversity and highlighting the urgent need for global solidarity in addressing this unfolding tragedy.

Mental Health and Psychosocial Support

The trauma of conflict and displacement leaves deep psychological scars. SSIF addressed mental health challenges through:

  • Trauma Counseling: Trained psychologists provided one-on-one and group therapy sessions, helping refugees navigate grief, loss, and anxiety.

  • Art and Play Therapy: Innovative programs for children used creative outlets to process trauma, rebuild trust, and foster emotional resilience.

  • Community Healing Workshops: Facilitated peer support groups where refugees could share experiences, rebuild social networks, and regain a sense of community.

House-to-House Medical Outreach

Understanding the barriers that prevent refugees from accessing care, SSIF launched a house-to-house medical outreach program, ensuring no individual is overlooked.

  • Personalized Medical Assessments: Our healthcare teams visited thousands of refugees in their temporary shelters, conducting thorough health evaluations and identifying urgent needs

  • Resource Allocation: Based on these assessments, refugees were provided with free medical treatment, including medications, wound care, and chronic disease management.

  • Continuity of Care: Medical journeys were carefully documented, enabling our teams to track progress, follow up on treatments, and adapt interventions to changing needs.

Creating Remote Employment Opportunities for Refugees

Understanding the restrictions placed on refugees in Egypt, which bar them from traditional local employment, SSIF is working to create remote job opportunities that connect refugees to global markets. This initiative aims to bypass local restrictions while providing a sustainable source of income for displaced individuals.

Our approach includes equipping refugees with digital skills and offering training in areas such as freelancing, virtual assistance, and online entrepreneurship. By collaborating with international partners, we strive to establish connections with global employers and platforms that value the contributions of skilled, remote workers. This effort empowers refugees to achieve financial independence, maintain dignity, and rebuild their lives, even in the face of legal and economic constraints.
